However newer logic boards, chips and manufacturing techniques mean that these days an ordinary soldering iron is totally useless for this purpose and you need tools equivalent to those used originally to build the logic boards, as such it is not possible unless you are a major manufacturer and they have no interest in doing this. The 2012 will just run circles around the 2014. ) I remember some enterprising people doing this to upgrade the original Macintosh 128KB to a 'Fat Mac' with 512KB, I even had this done to my own one back in 1985. This worked fine a few years ago, but now, as you can imagine, it's painfully slow to even just load IntelliJ IDEA. It's a little underpowered, but I only use it to build ios releases for my mobile games, all dev is done on a different box. This leaves the only option as being to sell it and buy a better model. I have a late 2014 Mac Mini (A1347) with 4GB soldered ram running Big Sur with the original 5400rpm HD. Even newer 2018 Mac-Mini RAM can be upgraded. It comes with a 1.4 GHz CPU and 4 GB of RAM. At 499, the base-model Mac mini is Apple’s least-expensive Mac, half the price of the MacBook Air but not nearly as peppy. If you’re using one of these models and you’re looking for a good way to bump up the performance, an SSD is, quite frankly, one of the only things you can do (unlike older Mac minis, Apple soldered the RAM in place). Regardless, I strongly recommend considering it not just for a 2014 Mac mini, but for any older Mac you’d like to pep up. Late 2014 Mac-Minis are the ONLY Mac-Mini model where the RAM is not upgradeable. I finally got around to upgrading my 2014 Mac mini with a solid state drive (SSD). For the Mac mini 2014 the memory is as you state soldered to the logic board, as such it is generally regarded as impossible to upgrade the memory. 2014 Mac-Minis need to be configured at the original time of purchase with as much RAM as it will ever have.
